It’s unclear if Khaled’s adorable son Ashad will make an appearance on the main stage, but the tiny tot, who has production credits on Khaled’s Album of the Year-nominated Grateful album, did hit the red carpet with his dad. This year’s host wasn’t the only artist to score nine nominations. Kendrick Lamar earned nine nods, including Best Hip Hop Video, Single of the Year, Lyricist of the Year and two nominations for Impact Track.
Up-and-coming rapper Cardi B, who made history when she landed at number one on the Billboard's Hot 100 charts for the third week in a row, also was nominated for nine awards, including Best Hip Hop Video, MVP of the Year, Best New Hip Hop Artist and Hustler of the Year. Cardi also will perform her summer banger “Bodak Yellow.” Other performers include Gucci Mane, Migos, Rick Ross, Trina and T-Pain, among others. Rapper Luther Campbell, otherwise known as Uncle Luke, will be celebrated with the I Am Hip Hop Honoree legacy award. The 56-year-old Miami native, who's been credited with putting Miami hip hop on the map, will perform a melody of some of his biggest hits. Although the night is intended to celebrate hip hop's biggest accomplishments, celebrities won't let the night go by without addressing some of the harsh realities people of color are facing in modern-day America.
A number of artists likely will use their time on the stage to advocate for equality and the Black Lives Matter movement. The annual BET Hip Hop Awards show will kick off at 8 p.m. ET on the BET network.
